To Infinity and Beyond! (or on to the next adventure)

After six and a half years of employment I resigned my position with Brocade effective at the beginning of June. I have been very fortunate to work in a field I love and with some of the most qualified and ethical co-workers in the industry.  My decision to leave was based on the changing dynamics of my family as well as a desire to travel less and be more involved in my local community. It was not an easy decision to make, I didn’t dislike my job, the travel was usually less than 50% and I visited nice places. I also really enjoyed working with the Department of Defense Hospitals and the program offices that support their mission.  It was a very difficult decision to make, but in the end it came down to making my career goals match my overall life priorities.

For most of my career I have, with each job change, left a company to pursue a different challenge or more money, but this job change is more about quality of life, about spending more time with my growing kids, being there for my young adult children and helping my wife navigate the challenges of raising boys.  I wasn’t looking for a new job, it found me.  The last few months at my current job have been challenging, over the last 2 years, we won 12 new hospital which required on site assistance with installing our equipmentand training the hospital staff on our products. As you can imagine, this required a bit of travel over and above normal pre-sales business travel.  While the pain and suffering of 70 hour work weeks and greater than 80% travel have come to a end, I had a lot of time to reevaluate my priorities and even though the travel with go back to a manageable level, I have decided that life is too short and I don’t want to miss even the little things in the life of my family.

I will still be working in Sales, this time for a Value Added Reseller named Solid IT.  I will be working predominately with Education and State and Local Government clients.  Many of these clients I have worked with before at prior companies, so I am looking forward to rekindling those relationships.  I will continue to be the technical lead in the sales team and will support the Brocade products I have been working with for the past six years and expanding my area of focus beyond networking products to also include firewalls, servers and cloud wireless.

My family continues to change, we recently moved to a new home, my oldest daughter will turn 20 this year, her younger sister has already started college and two of my boys are playing football and are quickly growing to be as tall or taller than me.  I don’t want to miss all the fun, and I don’t want my kids to grow up with a part time dad nor my wife to have to bear an inordinate portion of the burden of raising these beautiful children.

Please keep me and my family in your prayers, as with any significant life change, there will be challenges, but we believe we are following God’s lead on this one and with that we are excited about the road that lies ahead.

Wow, Allen, you are an inspiration! It’s a joy to “know” such a Godly man, husband and father. It’s so easy to get discouraged in this secular, anti-Catholic, anti-religious environment when you don’t see a light anywhere. You are a light!

More men should follow your example and put God and family first. I’m so thankful to Cindy for letting me know about your wonderful Facebook page and discussions.
